Responsible Pet Ownership : Common Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid These Common Pitfalls of Pet Ownership!
We write often on this blog about responsible pet ownership. It’s so important to be reminded of the simple mistakes that we can make in regards to our pets. Like parents (or maybe more like grandparents), it’s in many pet owners nature to dote on and spoil their pet. With the best of intentions, sometimes these actions can do more harm than good… Here, for the betterment of your pets welfare, we’ve compiled a list of some of the bigger mistakes that pet owners are prone to make. We’d love to hear your advice too!
Responsible Pet Ownership
- Over-feeding your pet – Puppy dog eyes and excitement every time you near the pet food are all temptations to give your pet a little treat. Just like with humans, regular little treats can add up and affect your pet’s health in a bad way. Additionally, pets are prone to many of the same issues associated with obesity. Seek out information on how much your pet should be fed according to its size and do so accordingly. Chubby pets are cute, but health should be the goal!
- Not taking your pet to the vet for regular check-ups – One of the most common pet mistakes made are owners only taking their pets to the vet when they are showing obvious signs of sickness or abnormal behavior. Again, just like with humans, preventative measures are better (and cheaper) than treating sicknesses or ailments. Regular yearly check-ups for your pet are a must!
- Feeding them the wrong or inappropriate foods – Different pets have different nutritional needs, so feeding them the right type of pet food is important. Table scraps, cheap food, and items high in sugar can cause great health concerns other than just obesity. Pet mistakes like this can lead to nutritional deficiencies that can negatively impact your pet’s enjoyment of life. Talk to your vet about the most economically nutritious food source for your particular pet.
- Enabling your pet’s fears and neurosis – Most pet owners like to humor their pets behavior and reactions. This can leave them with negative long-term impressions. If something spooks your pet that shouldn’t, don’t coddle them and don’t mimic their reaction, and if your pet misbehaves (even if it may be cute) always reprimand.
- Putting too much faith in your pet – No matter how well trained your pet is, remember to always take the proper precautions. If there is a leash law, use one! If your dog has never bitten anyone – don’t give him or her the chance. Many beloved pets are put down each year because their owner over-estimates their animal’s ability to control themselves. It’s always better to be safe!
