Animal Shelters always win with “Puppy Bowl”

Not only do the viewers receive an abundance of cuteness viewing a variety of puppies who are playing on a makeshift football field that “mimics a football game,” but they are also helping those puppies and adult dogs that are waiting for their forever home while in an animal shelter. Because of this awareness on national television, animal shelters receive an increase of visitors each year.

The Puppy Bowl is an annual two-hour event that debuted on the Animal Planet cable channel eight years ago. The puppies score touchdowns when they cross the goal line with a toy. There is an award given for Most Valuable Pup, along with several different cameras catching all of the fun action. These include a water bowl cam, a new lipstick cam that’s in the lips of the toys, slow-motion cameras, hedgehog referees, a puppy hot tub, and a blimp with a crew of hamsters. Biographies on each puppy play across the screen, letting viewers know where they are available for adoption. Over 300 puppies and kittens have been featured on “Puppy Bowl,” and is an integral part for raising awareness with animal adoption.

The Puppy Bowl is a big hit among TV audiences, with 6 million viewers for the most recent show, with 9 million watching in 2012, along with 1.4 million video stream viewings. 84 animals, including 21 kittens from a New York shelter, were also shown during the halftime hour, with 63 puppies from 23 shelters.

Most of the puppies have already found homes, with only four of the puppies still looking for a home. The show is a tangible existence of success to feature adoptable puppies and kittens looking for a great home.
