Traditional and Training Collars for Your Pet: A Brief Guide

With so many selections of a variety of dog collars, it’s a bit overwhelming to determine which one is the best for your pet; you don’t want them too tight or too lose, especially, and you want to make sure you have the appropriate one for your pet. There are also dogs that require specific collars, so we’re offering suggestions for choosing the perfect dog collar. Check them out below:

Traditional Dog Collars: These are usually made out of nylon or leather, and are available in a variety of styles, colors and widths. Not sure of how loose or tight a dog collar should be? Fitting two fingers easily between the collar and neck will give the right amount of room for movement.

Dog Harness:  These are recommended for pets with upper respiratory diseases, which doesn’t place pressure on the throat or trachea area.

For training purposes:

Halter-type dog collar: A great training collar which allows your dog to walk beside or behind you, and helps you with controlling your dog during training of he or she.

Choke-chain dog collar: This is used for training or re-training  your pet, but it is very important this collar is used appropriately, because mis-use can harm your dog. Choke collars should only be used for training purposes, nothing further.

Pronged collar: This collar is designed for the biggest and most difficult of dogs to train, which is a last resort collar for those dogs who are extremely difficult to train. As with a choke-chain collar, this should only be used temporarily and to train.

As noted above, there are a variety of collars out there from different vendors for your pet. What collar do you prefer, and which one has worked the best for you?

Actress Tiffani Thiessen emBARKS with new Pet Health effort

Actress Tiffani Thiessen, best known for her portrayal as Kelly on Saved by the Bell, and now plays Elizabeth on the hit USA show, White Collar, has teamed up with EmBARK on their current pet health effort to educate and empower pet owners. EmBARK is asking pet owners to pledge on their site as a pinpoint to become more mindful of their pet’s continuous needs.

This pledge is crucial, as each pledge will donate a Sergeant’s Pet Health Kit to an animal waiting for their forever home in animal shelters nationwide. The American Humane Society will assist with those animal shelters that have the most need. There will be up to 5,000 kits donated, and the retail value of each kit is $50, and includes products to keep pets healthy, such as Sergeant’s Whiff Shampoo, PurLuvin Sizzlin Strips, Sentry Petdex and lots more.

We, at Pet Nanny, think this is a wonderful service and look forward to pledging ourselves! For more information, check out:

Helpful Tips To Reduce Shedding

We at Pet Nanny love The Dog Guide, as it is informative, insightful, fun and entertaining. They provide a plethora of great tips, tricks and news referencing health and longevity for your precious pooch. Most pet owners often wonder what they can do to prevent an overabundance of shedding. The Dog Guide has provided a few tips, considered the most important for shedding dogs.  Find out what they are below:

*Brushing

It is incredibly important to brush your dog, and it’s more important to have the right one. The Dog Guide suggests the Furminator line of de-shedding tools, as well as the Kong Zoom and Broom, which is a rubber brush that has magnetic-like qualities in absorbing your pet’s hair.

*Vitamin Supplements- Fatty Acids

It’s important that your pooch have a nutritious diet, along with great supplements to preserve their skin and coat. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acides are considered the best in improving your dog’s skin and health. We have a great supplement with our Wholistic line, Wholistic Wild Deep Sea Salmon Oil, which contains an abundant amount of Omega-3 and Omega-6.

*Diet- We can’t stress this enough

Because this is the area that most people fail to maintain a success rate with for a long period of time. It’s easy to give them food scraps, or buy food that is cheap because it’s more affordable. However, we’re not doing any favors for our pets, and certain foods can cause an abundant of excessive fur. We have a wonderful Wholistic line that contain digestive enzymes and potent probiotics to ensure your dog (or cat)’s overall health.

*Maintain Regular Veterinary Visits

Crucial to your pet’s health are yearly and monthly veterinary visits for check-ups and other health issues you may have with your pet. The shedding could be an allergic reaction, so it’s important to maintain consistency with these visits.

*Purchase A Reliable Vaccuum

Have a dog that sheds more than you think is average, but nothing seems to work adequately? Try investing in a great vaccuum, and Dyson is recommended as the best in picking up the most dog hair.

Does your pet shed often? What are your tips and tricks to alleviate the shedding?

New Pet Watchman App Provides Peace Of Mind

If you haven’t yet read about our new pet sitting mobile application, Pet Watchman, you won’t want to miss this post! The app is the first of its kind in the pet sitting industry.

Here’s an excerpt from a recent Pet Watchman press release:

Pet Nanny, LLC recently developed an exciting new pet sitting mobile application: Pet Watchman. The app—the first of its kind in the pet sitting industry—enhances the company’s ability to provide the kind of high-quality, in-home pet care that its clients have come to expect. “This app is taking the peace-of-mind factor that our clients will receive from using Pet Nanny to the next big level,” said Owner Colleen Sedgwick.

The Pet Watchman app is easy for the company’s pet sitters and clients to use. Here’s how it works:

  • Each pet sitter and client has the app on his or her iPhone.
  • When the sitter arrives, he or she chooses the specific client from their client list on the app.
  • The pet sitter then hits the start button and the app will record the time of arrival and start timing the visit. (The GPS locator in the phone must match the address of the client on file.)
  • At the end of the visit, the pet sitter will be able to leave a virtual note, as well as upload videos and photos of the pets or anything else they want the client to see.
  • The sitter then hits the stop button, which records the ending time and duration of the visit.
  • The client automatically receives a push notification that an entry has been made.
  • The client can access their account by choosing the appropriate sitter from their list of pet sitters.
  • If the client logs in and a visit is taking place, there will be a green light next to the sitter’s name.
  • The client can leave notes for their pet sitter and/or respond to notes left by the pet sitter. This will send their sitter a notification.
  • The client can also access a daily diary function to see a complete history of communication with a particular pet sitter.
  • The Pet Nanny office will also have the history of all visits and communications that take place.

To start, we have had the application developed on the iOS platform, meaning only those sitters and clients that have an iPhone or an iPad can use the application. Currently we are developing the Android and Windows version of the app, which should be ready to launch in approximately 4 weeks time. The beta build of the iOS app will be ready to launch by next week.

Here’s a peek at what this exciting new app will look like:
