Common Health Problems in Labrador Retrievers and How to Care for Them

The world’s most beloved pet is a lovable delight to have as a part of the family, but there are also possible health problems that can occur in your Lab. Therefore, owners need to know what could possibly occur with their Labrador’s health, and we have provided a list of important concerns to be aware of.

  • Obesity is the most common problem in Labradors. Instead of feeding he or she treats, play with them instead. Supplement your lab foods with either one of our delicious Wholistic products, such as Wholistic Digest All, which regulates your dog’s digestive track, as well as providing the proper nutrients they need.
  • Several more of the health problems that occur in the lifespan of a Labrador are:
  • Patellar Luxation, which is knee-cap dislocation
  • Canine Hip Dysplasia
  • Osteochondritis (know as canine elbow and shoulder dysplasia)

Canine hip dysplasia is also common in other popular breeds as well, and can be maintained through proper nutrition and medical care, as well as supplemental foods, such as our Wholistic MSM, which provides the maximum amount of nutrients that a pet needs for using most functions of the body; this will also work well for Osteochondritis. Or, if you want to focus solely on your pet’s joints, try our Wholistic Joint Mobility, which provides concentrated joint support.

While not as common, there is occasional awareness that might be raised with:

  • Diabetes
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia, is a congenital disorder that is present from birth, and causes the heart to work less efficiently.
  • Entropion, is a turning of the eyelid that causes rubbing against they eyes.
  • Exercise-induced collapse known as Distichiasis, an abnormal growth of lashes.

Minor health concerns consist of:

  • Retinal Dysplasia
  • Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy, is a form of eye disease.
  • Hypothyroidism, a thyroid hormone deficiency
  • Hot Spots
  • Cataracts

Be sure to have your puppy (or Lab) tested for any of these possible conditions, and to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle for your pet, as well as follow the guidelines as directed by your veterinarian.

Health Problems with Golden Retrievers and How to Prevent Them

The life expectancy of a Golden Retriever is 15 years of age. On the other hand, many of our pet’s life expectancy is cut short due to health problems that undermine their life. The following health problems are the most common and detrimental to Golden Retrievers so be sure you are taking your pets to the veterinarian on regular visits.

The most common health problem, as in many other breeds, is:

The other two health problems that affect most Golden Retrievers are:

  • Cataracts, which is an eye condition that leads to impaired vision, which can result in your pet’s vision loss.
  • Allergies, which affect your pet’s skin. For pets with sensitive skin, try our Wholistic Heavenly Herbal Pet Shampoo.

For overall supplemental super-charged health, try our Wholistic Flax Seed Oil, which has high concentrations of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. This incredibly rich acid increases metabolism, cardiovascular and immune health. It is also a possible source in preventing cancer, and may be help in the essential prevention of over 50 common diseases and illnesses.

Other common health issues are:

  • Eczema

Providing ourWholistic brand supplements can help your pet’s digestive tract, as well as many other of our renowned products that can assist with healthy urinary tract and overall health. As with many other breeds, Golden Retrievers’ health problems are often times a result of heredity and passed down through bloodlines. Pet Care Tips for Road Trips

Planning and packing for a road trip, short or long, can be a strategic task to fulfill, especially if pets are hitting the road with you. With all that’s on your plate for preparing for a successful and fun trip to your ultimate destination, a little help to guide you there is what we’re here for. Please find the following suggestions and tips helpful to you in preparing an easy transition to bringing your pet on the road with you.

  • Bring Supplies (preferably a travel kit)- Of course, have these products in their own luggage for easy access, including bowls, measuring scoops and serving spoons, and a can opener. Pet toys can come in handy as well to reduce stress for your pet, but only allow your pet to play with the toy in sight. Make sure you bring an adequate amount of food supply.
  • Approval from Vet– If your pet has a pre-existing condition, your vet may want you to refrain from bringing your pet on the road with you. In that case, pet-sitters are an excellent form of choice, and many of them have reasonable rates. Always make sure your pet has their vaccinations current, and your vet can always let you know if your pet will be well enough to go on the road with you. Your vet can also let you know if your pet will need any medication for anxiety or motion sickness while traveling.
  • Match Travel Plans with Pets Needs– If it’s easier for you and your pet to ride in a car, depending if they enjoy traveling, that will possibly be the best option. Or, if you opt to ride on a plain, make sure you match as closely as possible to your pet’s needs.
  • Food, Food, Food– Food has been mentioned several times as this is one of the most important factors while traveling with your pet. Ensure that you are following your pet’s feeding schedule similar to that at home. If you veer too far off track from your pet’s regular feeding schedule, unwanted stress and anxiety can and may occur. Feeding frequency depends on the metabolism and weight of your pet. Always keep your pet hydrated with water, as it’s essential to keep your pet’s body temperature normal.

In reference to food, we have excellent health and nutritional supplements for your pet with our Wholistic Pet Products, including Digestive and Joint Support for Canines, as well as for Feline’s. Our treats and chews are also known for their essential health and raw-food benefits. Check out our full-product line at our Happy & Healthy Pet Boutique!

Tips for Pet Groomers and their Services

With National Pet Week being a central focus this past week, there are some time-saving tips and suggestions for pet groomers to promote their services and expertise. With the average American spending over $53 billion dollars for food, veterinary care, kennels, and more, animals are a costly, yet loved, commodity. As referenced in a recent press release that owners “will show appreciation for their pets with a visit to a pet groomer.”

With increase in business for pet grooming, the following are some helpful tips for professional groomers to keep current and attract additional clientele. Many of these tips are essential basics for any business to maintain longevity and success:

  • E-mail Newsletter– This is an ideal way to attract potential current customers with promotions, discounts and additional offers.
  • Social Media– It seems every business site now has a fan page, whether you want to promote your business, keep your customers updated with current hours, early closings, and exclusive specials for those who are connected with you on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more.
  • Web Site– Of course, a website is necessary to promote your business, as not everyone is on social media, and wants to be able to have the option to connect with you outside of Facebook and Twitter.
  • Customer Referral– Word-of-mouth has a huge effect on business sales and increasing customer loyalty, so offering incentive to current customers who refer their friends, family and/or colleagues, is an added bonus.

A New Allergy Treatment for Cats Eliminates Symptoms for Two Years

In Canada, researchers have developed a new treatment for cats that will eliminate their symptoms for at least two years. Researchers tested their new treatment on cats during various researches, which prompted most of the cats to stay well for nearly two years after the treatments. This research was conducted for over 10 years (Wow!), along with testing a vaccine that had almost zero side effects.

If additional tests are deemed productive and further release in positive results, the vaccine might be available in two years.

What do you think? Are you:

  • Cautious
  • Yeah right!
  • Love it!

We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

We take pride in making your pets' well being a priority while you are away from home.

"Carol was very loving and attentive to Chance and Nina. She went out of her way to stay in touch and respond to communications while we were gone. She was cheerfully accommodating when we changed plans for our return date. We are completely satisfied with your service and will be using you again."
